For those of us seeking to change our attitudes…

1. You might need help with this. Ask God.

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,

grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;

to be understood as to understand;

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

2. Listen to what others have to say. Take advice.

Word from the wise:

“You have brains in your head and feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.
You’re on your own and you know what you know
And you are the one who’ll decide where to go.”-Dr. Seuss

3. But not all of it:

Always listen to the experts. They’ll tell you what can’t be done and why. Then do it.–Robert Heinlein

There is so much good in the worst of us,
And so much bad in the best of us,
That it hardly becomes any of us
To talk about the rest of us.
~Edward Wallis Hoch

It is wrong to follow the advice of an adversary; nevertheless, it is right to hear it, that you may do the contrary, and this is the essence of good policy.–Sa’di (Gulistan)
